- Your note "The Price of Penance" indicates that Japanese
- Americans were awarded checks for $20,000 as restitution for
- their forced internment during World War II (NATION, May 8).
- Ronald Reagan signed legislation authorizing the payments on
- Aug. 10, 1988. As yet, however, no eligible individual has
- received any money. It is up to Congress to take the final step
- by appropriating the required funding to remedy symbolically a
- grievous error committed by the U.S. against a group of its own
- citizens.
